Lower Keys Guides Association Education Modules
LKGA's NextGen Mariners & Ecosystem Stewards Education Program
Why We Created These Modules
The Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA) is committed to protecting the waters, fish, and way of life that define the Florida Keys. Our fishing guides are not only anglers but also educators, conservationists, and advocates. We created the NextGen Mariners curriculum to give teachers and students engaging, science-based lessons that connect directly to our local environment. These resources fill a gap in Monroe County classrooms by teaching responsible boating, sustainable fishing, and conservation practices tailored to Monroe County (Florida Keys), but are available for use by all educators.
By empowering young people with knowledge and skills, we are preparing the next generation of boaters, anglers, and community leaders to care for the ecosystems we all depend on. The creation of these modules was made possible by a generous grant from the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys.
Benefits for Teachers & Students
- Aligned with Florida Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and Ocean Literacy Principles, making it easy to integrate into existing curricula.
- Hands-on activities keep students engaged while reinforcing science and conservation concepts.
- Locally relevant content connects directly to the ecosystems that surround Monroe County students every day.
Module 1: Boating 101
Students learn the essentials of safe and responsible boating. Lessons cover navigation rules, safety equipment, trip preparation, and how human actions affect marine ecosystems. Activities include map challenges, sign-matching, and a “Boater’s Pledge.” By the end, students understand that boating is not just about recreation—it’s about stewardship.

Module 2: Fish Handling Techniques
This module introduces students to sustainable fishing practices that protect fish and habitats. Through interactive activities, students learn to identify common Florida species, understand size and bag limits, and practice proper handling to minimize harm. The lessons emphasize respect for regulations, safe release techniques, and the values of LKGA’s own Code of Conduct.

Module 3: Conservation Awareness
Focusing on mangroves, seagrass, and flats fish, this module connects students with the fragile ecosystems of the Florida Keys. Students learn to identify different mangrove and seagrass species, understand their ecological importance, and recognize how humans and natural systems are intertwined. Activities include matching games, ecosystem grids, and hands-on filter experiments.
