The Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships recently launched a petition to put referenda on the ballot to reduce the number of cruise ships to Key West, reduce number of people disembarking, and give preference to cruise lines with the best environmental records. The petition needed 1,500 signatures yet collected over 2,500.
With only 8% of all tourist spending, cruise ships make up 50% of tourist volume. Key West Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships contends the health risk presented by cruise ships outweighs any economic benefit especially during the Covid-19 pandemic link with cruise ships. They also argue cruise ships deter multi-day tourists who make up 92% of all tourist spending.
The Committee for Safer, Cleaner Ships states more than 390 cruise ships carrying 1.2 million people visited Key West last year. Key West currently has no regulations in place governing cruise ships.
