LKGA Supports Bonefish Spawning Closure in Biscayne National Park
The Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA) has submitted a letter of support to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regarding a proposed seasonal closure in Biscayne National Park to protect a documented bonefish pre-spawning aggregation (PSA) site.
This proposed rule—Agenda Item 9B: Final Rule 68B-7.008, F.A.C.—is based on scientific research led by Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) and reflects a targeted, time-limited approach to conservation. The closure would protect a 1.74-square-mile area during peak spawning months (March through May), ensuring that this critical life stage is not disrupted.
As an organization, LKGA typically advocates for minimal use of closures—but in this case, the biological justification is strong, the area is narrowly defined, and the duration is limited. This is exactly the kind of precision management that helps ensure the long-term health of our flats fishery without unnecessary burden to user groups.
We commend FWC, BTT, and the many stakeholders involved in developing this proposal, and we encourage the Commission to move forward with adoption of this important rule.
