LKGA Opposes Proposed Rock Mine Near EAA Reservoir

The Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA) has submitted a formal letter to Governor Ron DeSantis urging him to oppose the proposed Southland rock mine adjacent to the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir.

While we’ve long supported the Governor’s leadership on Everglades restoration—including his role in advancing the EAA Reservoir and securing historic clean water funding—this new industrial proposal threatens to undermine that very progress.

The proposed 40-year rock mine poses serious risks to the integrity of the EAA Reservoir project and the broader restoration goals it supports. The approval process has lacked transparency, with limited public input and growing concern from scientists, stakeholders, and the fishing community.

As professional guides who rely on clean water and healthy ecosystems, we believe this project is a step backward. We’re calling on the Governor to stop the mine before lasting harm is done to Florida’s water, fishery, and way of life.
